Yoga/Meditation Pavilion

Yoga/Meditation Pavilion

Space and shade are created by a canopy in the form of a mandala of suspended petals. The pavilion is open to the surrounding forest and lake.

Yoga/Meditation Pavilion

The design focuses on creating a comfortable shadow where users can enjoy the air, hear the sounds, and smell the forest.

The structure is designed to be made of aluminium, chosen for its sustainability and low maintenance. The 36 petals are suspended with cables from a surrounding frame, allowing for gentle movement in the wind. At the centre of the mandala is a transparent blue glass disk, providing a view of the sky from below. The base is made of wood and cantilevers over the edge of the lake.

A variation of the design includes an enclosed room below for colder days, with stairs leading up to the open mandala space on the roof.

The design was developed in stages, starting with sketches, paper models, and CAD drawings. To design the suspension arrangement of the petals and to better understand the influence of gravity in realty, as opposed to simulations on a computer screen, we made a quarter-scale model of the frame.

The petals were laser-cut from steel (to simulate most of the weight) and suspended by 0.5mm steel cables. The geometry of the 1:4 scale model was measured, and new CAD drawings were created from it, which were then used to produce the final production drawings.
