Hairy Creature Speakers

Hairy Creature Speakers

With the addition of materials including horsehair and sisal, a series of Yamaha’s LSX-70 and LSX-170 speakers have been transformed into limited edition Hairy Creature Speakers turning the industrially produced speakers into handcrafted objects which are warm, characterful and materially interesting.

These speakers are like friendly pets to have around. You can take them for a walk and enjoy their glow in the dark. On request of Yamaha, the studio has transformed these industrially produced speakers into handcrafted objects.

The exaggerated handle on top clearly expresses the portability of this rechargeable Bluetooth speaker and references transmission antennas. The light is amplified by a custom made acrylic lens, which also functions as a sound reflector.

A presentation of the speakers was hosted at Tracey Neuls in Marylebone with a soundscape composed by sonic artist Manabu Shimada. The composition consisted of two parts: a musique concrète soundscape using Yamaha field recordings and postmodern minimal music for piano and string quartet, inspired by the material of the Hairy Creature Speakers.
