Anima Animus

Anima Animus

Anima Animus is Emma Woffenden and her partner Tord Boontje's first collaborative exhibition. It explores the creative dialogue between the couple, who sometimes work in tandem yet always remain distinct from one another.

Tord Boontje is an internationally acclaimed designer.  Emma Woffenden is an artist and originally trained as a glassmaker. Boontje and Woffenden have discussed, collaborated and disagreed for sixteen years. They share similarities in the materials they use, concepts they explore and their approach to process. Despite this, this exhibition illustrates they both clearly express opposing points of view towards the same subjects.

The show presents a selection of the artists’ earlier work, which they created individually, and new, collaborative installations. Emma Woffenden’s work can be defined as hard-edged, controlled and almost excruciatingly intimate and personal. Tord Boontje’s work seems to be sentimental, dreamy and has a global resonance. Their work is a confusion of gender stereotypes. Nevertheless, they do share a sense of humour, which cuts through the sometimes-heavy subject matter.

This exhibition has been organised in collaboration with Kvadrat, Ebeltoft, and runs from 2 October 2009 to 14 March 2010 at Glasmuseet Ebeltoft, Denmark.

Lace in Translation

Lace in Translation

September 24 2009 through April 3 2010, The Design Center at Philadelphia University (TDC) presents Lace in Translation, a new exhibition of contemporary work that explores the intersection of luxurious hand-craftsmanship with modern, mass production.

TDC's historic Quaker Lace Company collection is the inspiration for three internationally renowned artists and designers reconsidering conventional notions of lace. European designers Tord Boontje and Demakersvan, and Canadian artist Cal Lane have created installations specifically for TDC's unique and intimate space – a 1950s era, Hollywood-style ranch house, situated on the edge of Fairmount Park.

Tord Boontje appointed Professor

Tord Boontje has been appointed Professor and Head of Design Products at the Royal College of Art, one of the most highly regarded and influential design departments in the world. Boontje will fill the role that is currently held by Professor Ron Arad, who steps down from the position in July.

With a background that embraces design education as much as design itself, Boontje's career has come full circle. Born in Enschede in the Netherlands in 1968, Tord Boontje studied industrial design first at the Design Academy in Eindhoven and then at the Royal College of Art, where he received his MA in Industrial Design. In 2000, Boontje returned to the College, this time as tutor in Design Products. Four years later he left to set up his own design company, Studio Tord Boontje.

Tord Boontje's designs are often described as being counter-minimalist in their decorativeness. The Dutch designer is the subject of a major book by Martina Margetts, Tord Boontje, which takes a close look at his work, fleshing out the relationship between craft, design and technology. This association is often referred to in reviews of his work. Boontje has shown internationally in group exhibitions, solo exhibitions and is regularly discussed in catalogues, books and the media.

Studio Tord Boontje works in the areas of product design, furniture, textiles, architectural commissions and graphics. The studio's clients and projects are often international, with two major architectural projects currently ongoing in Taiwan and Florida. The nature of the studio's projects range from design for affordable industrial production to handmade artisanal objects in developing countries such as Guatamala, Colombia and Senegal.

Alongside his new position heading up Design Products, Boontje will retain his role as Director of Studio Tord Boontje. As such he will continue to build on the significant body of work that has made his name as a designer celebrated all over the world. He is currently working together on an exhibition at the National Glass Museum in Denmark (Ebeltoft) with his partner, the glass artist Emma Woffenden, whom he met whilst they were fellow students at the RCA.

Professor Sir Christopher Frayling, Rector of the Royal College of Art, said: Tord brings with him the critical insights of a top rank designer, the strong leadership experience gained by setting up an commercially successful design studio, and - of course - the reputation of all the objects and environments and buildings he has created. On top of this he has a strong background in design education, much of it gained here at the Royal College of Art, a place he loves. We are delighted that he will be able to bring these talents to his position as Professor of Design Products, to the great benefit of the College. This is a terrific appointment.

Professor Tord Boontje said: I am very excited about my appointment as Professor of Design Products at the Royal College of Art. It is a great opportunity to lead and inspire a fantastic group of students, tutors, technicians and administrative staff. The department has a fantastic pluralistic character, an experimental nature, a culture of innovation and a very individual approach to student's development. I am very keen to maintain these qualities and to build further upon them.

Fig Leaf wardrobe on show

Telling Tales: Fantasy and Fear in Contemporary Design explores the recent trend among European designers for unique or limited edition pieces that push the boundaries between art and design.

It showcases furniture, lighting and ceramics, designed by a new generation of international designers, including Tord Boontje, Maarten Baas, Jurgen Bey and Studio Job, who are all inspired by the spirit of story-telling. Each tells a tale through their use of decorative devices, historical allusions or choice of materials, sharing common themes such as fantasy, parody and a concern with mortality.

Visit Telling Tales from 14 July to 18 October 2009 at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

Digital Memories

Digital Memories

For the Milan Design Week 2009, Bisazza presented the collection Digital Memories three new pieces of furniture designed by Tord Boontje for Bisazza Home comprised of two commodes and a table.

When I look at mosaic patterns, I am immediately reminded of a pixelated image, a digital image. We use digital images from cameras and video to capture moments of life, these become our memories. The collection of mosaic for Bisazza is based on the idea to use images that trigger memories when you look at them. A pattern of sunlight filtering through the leaves of trees can remind you of a nice summer day, a picnic in the park or daydreaming in the back of a car and watching the landscape going by. These patterns become personalised memories for each viewer, we all share these memories.

Digital Memories comprises commodes Night Vision and Summer Trees, and Dark Waters table.
