The Forest of Karakusa, Installations, Studio Tord Boontje

The Forest of Karakusa

In this presentation, the first in Japan, Tord Boontje expands the ancient Karakusa (‘China grass’) decorative language, which Shiseido uses to characterise its lifestyle products.

Boontje was fascinated to see the parallels between his own decorative designs -  realised in a bench, swing, chandelier, chair made of branches -  and the sinuous evocation of flora and fauna in the tradition of Karakusa, which in turn suggests a dialogue with the Western stylised arabesque forms of Art Nouveau and Rococo.

Boontje’s imagery and installation reflect his interest in fairy tales.
